Friends, United in Christ, Nurturing Each Other and the World
Dear Church Family,
Jesus had disciples. Jesus calls us to be His disciples. Jesus told His disciples to “go and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19). Okay, so what is a disciple then? One definition is “a disciple is one who accepts and adheres to the doctrines of another.” We accept and adhere to the teachings of Jesus Christ so that works. Our Virginia Conference UMC Bishop Lewis has developed a vision for the conference that states we will “be disciples of Jesus Christ who are lifelong learners who influence others to serve.”
Disciples. Lifelong learners. Influencers. Servers. Lifelong learners are people who have not arrived and figured it all out but who are intentionally, continually pursuing better understanding and growing in their knowledge of discipleship. Influencers are those who do not keep what understanding and knowledge they have attained to themselves but share it with others in order to help them learn also. Servers are those who seek to meet the needs of others rather than waiting for someone to come and do something for them.
So following the Bishop’s vision of discipleship we would all be humble, intentional learners of Christian faith who willingly share what we have learned with others and do that with the attitude of a servant whose goal is to meet the needs of those we serve. Humility. Intentionality. Servant attitude. Sounds a lot like Jesus. Which is exactly what being a disciple really is – being like the person whose doctrines we have accepted and adhered to. That works.
Let’s go West Hanover Charge Saints and be disciples of Jesus Christ. He is depending on us and so are those who do not even know that being a disciple of Jesus Christ is an option. WOW!! Can’t wait to keep learning, influencing and serving others.
     With transforming hope,
     Claudia
