Friends, United in Christ, Nurturing Each Other and the World
Dear Church Family,
I love the season of Lent from its beginning in repentance and humbleness of Ash Wednesday to its glorious resurrection triumph of Easter Sunday morning. The season of Lent lends itself to introspection, to drawing closer to God and to remembering the extreme cost of free grace.
In late 2016 I was looking at the upcoming liturgical seasons for the years ahead and realized that in 2018 we had a double blessing coming. Lent would begin with Ash Wednesday on February 14th (yes, Valentine’s Day) and conclude on Easter Sunday, April 1st (yes, April Fool’s Day!). “Surprise! I’m alive again!” I could just hear Jesus saying.
After more than a year of waiting, here we are, just a couple weeks away from celebrating “remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return” once again. We will bear the mark of those who know we are but dust and who are so in need of a Savior. Yet this year we will do that on the day of the year marked for love and for showering love on those around us.
Romans 5:6 & 8 tells us that, “when we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners … God showed His great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.” In other words, God knew we are “but dust and that to dust we shall return” but God also knew we were made to be in love with God. So God comes to bring us, dusty, dirty sinners, back into right relationship with God through Christ’s sacrificial death so that God could love on us and we could love God back.
Happy Valentine’s Day and Blessed Ash Wednesday combined into one this year. Only our perfect God does things so well!
     With transforming Christmas hope,
